When Rapists Have More Rights Than Women
Ladies, while we take in the everchanging insanity provoked each day by 45 – anti-Muslim rhetoric, children being separated from parents, an impending war with Iran, a trade war with China – American women are having their rights stripped away.
I’ll repeat that for those of you who said it would never happen: While Trump distracts us with his craziness, we women are losing our rights – right here in America.
Twenty-five white men just voted to make abortion illegal in Alabama – even when the victim is raped.
You’d think the state would focus on, I don’t know – poverty – since it’s one of the poorest states in America.
Rolling Stone underscores the priorities of the state’s lawmakers’:
“If this law is enacted, performing a safe and constitutionally protected procedure that nearly one in four women will have in their lifetimes will be criminalized to a larger degree than sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl.”
For all their sanctimony about a fetus being an unborn child with an inherent right to life, their empathy doesn’t extend to funding services to support the children who will result from their war on women.
And although the Republican party has waged a war against women for decades, it has never been so heinously obvious as it is today. They oppose anyone who threatens their power: people of color, women, gays.
If we can’t get an abortion or pay for contraception, having sex outside of marriage becomes inconvenient, rendering us more inclined to get married early / bypassing a career, and making divorce riddled with consequences women haven’t had to ponder since 1973.
The law will, of course, be challenged because it violates Roe v Wade – and that’s what they want. They want it to go to the Supreme Court so that Roe v Wade will be called into question. And they’ve never had a better shot of flipping it, now that we’ve got two sexual predators on the Supreme Court.
So, what are you going to do about this? I mean it. What are you going to do with your voice and your power?
Because I’m gay. I’m married to a woman and as powerful as I think my wife Steph is, I don’t think she’s getting me pregnant anytime soon. My abortion days are behind me. I don’t need that right anymore. But you do.
So, if you don’t grab your ovaries and take control of them, I know 25 white men who’d be happy to do it for you.
