How Steph and I negotiate “safety” during the pandemic

It recently occurred to me that although we’re in month five of the pandemic, my wife Steph and I have yet to discuss how we each want to live for the foreseeable future. Like, the nuts and bolts of staying safe – risks we’re willing to take in the name of quality-of-life during COVID.

If you know anything about me, you’re probably as surprised as I am. I’m a big proponent of hammering out relationship expectations and memorializing the compromises we land on at a level of detail that could make an attorney uncomfortable.

So when my assistant made an offhand comment to me about admiring how Steph and I have decided to live during COVID, it gave me pause…

We never decided anything. We fell into a pattern without ever discussing it.

Which is how I found myself on a week-long journey to clarify how I want to live my life, toggling between soul-searching and expert-seeking.

Corona Minimizer

Q

Hi Dr. Darcy,

I’m wondering if you have any tactics on how to handle COVID19 bully’s? My mother-in-law doesn’t believe in what she calls, “living in fear” and has not been social distancing. Furthermore, tonight while FaceTiming with her she made several demeaning comments about our choice to stay isolated.

Her comments and questions were purposefully challenging our ways. I don’t want to create a big family drama but I certainly don’t care to hear her feedback on how I’m keeping my family safe. Any thoughts you have on future responses would be appreciated. Thanks!

Truthfully, many, many people will emerge with post-traumatic stress disorder.

But it’s not a foregone conclusion.

Click here to watch this week’s video and learn exactly what to do to avoid it.
