Could I Be Straight?

Dear Dr. Darcy:

I have always been a rebellious type – always willing to try new things.  I should back up.  I’ve identified as gay since high school.  I’m now in my 30’s and for the first time, I had sex with a woman last week.  I’m sure some of it was the novelty of it being my first time, but it was amazing.  I can’t stop thinking about it and I’m now beginning to wonder if I was ever really gay or if maybe I was just rebelling by being with men.  Also, the woman I slept with is my best friend of 15 years.  Bad idea?

ANSWER

You think?  Yes, it’s a horrific idea to sleep with your best friend.  What were you planning to do if it sucked?  Call your best friend and laugh about it? And did you not know that women form attachments when they sleep with people? If she wasn’t in love with you before you had sex (which most girl bff’s of gay men are), she’s probably in love with you now.  Do not sleep with her again.

As far as your sexuality goes, anything’s possible.  Give yourself some time to explore the female gender – see if the novelty wears off.  But for heaven’s sake, don’t experiment with women you know.  It’s a huge world we live in.  Find a stranger to schtoop.
